How to Dress For Winter Weather in Temperatures Between 35-20 Degrees
This article is a continuation of our 'Cold, Colder, Coldest' digital campaign and in-store promotion.
Last week we focused on how to dress for 'cold' conditions, or, Chicago weather with temperatures between 50 and 35 degrees. We consider temperatures between 35 and 20 degrees "colder" (we'll get into "coldest" temperatures next week) and layering for this weather is a bit different.
To help you dress for the current weather, all baselayers are 15% off at Fleet Feet Sports Chicago stores now through November 21st. Here's what changes between "cold" and "colder" apparel and below are two example outfits we put together.
From Technical Long Sleeves to Merino Wool Baselayers
In "cold" temperatures you can get away with a technical long sleeve. In "colder" temperatures you'll need to swap that out for a proper baselayer. A proper baselayer is one that is made from merino wool. Merino wool is somewhat of a magical fabric. Here's why:
- It's breathable
- A merino fiber can absorb and retain up to 30% of its own weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch. Most synthetics feel wet after they absorb less than 7%.
- It generates heat
- In cold weather merino performance fabric uses moisture absorbed from the environment to generate heat (a process called “heat of sorption”).
- It's moisture wicking
- In warm weather, merino keeps your skin cool by transporting moisture vapor away from the skin to be evaporated.
- It's strong
- Merino wool is predominately made of interlocking protein molecules known as keratin, the same protein that is in our own skin and hair. Individual wool fibers have the ability to be bent, flexed and stretched in any direction 30,000 times or more without damage.
- It reduces odors
- Merino wool has an ability to effectively manage moisture because it doesn't give the bacteria the moist environment they need to thrive.
- It's non-itch
- Merino wool is able to stay itch-free thanks to its fiber’s smaller diameter, or being “finer”.
From Lightweight Jackets to Midweight Jackets
Midweight jackets differ from lightweight jackets by adding insulation. Thus, a few extra ounces is added to the overall weight. Midweight jackets typically also use a water and wind resistant softshell outer fabric. Many midweight jackets also keep winter running on their mind by adding 360 degrees of reflectivity in the pattern for the darker days.
From Lightweight Pants to Insulated Pants
"Colder" temps move from lightweight, free flowing pants to a more insulated pant. Pants made for these temperatures use a brushed interior that almost feels like fleece. The weave of the fabric is also typically tighter creating insulation.
From Optional Headband to Mandatory Headband or Hat
While headbands are optional in "cold" temperatures, they aren't in "colder" temperatures. With windchill in temperatures between 20 and 35 degrees, frostbite can occur to the ears within 30 minutes. A properly fitting headband or hat can provide adequate coverage and prevent frostbite. You can take a look at the National Weather Service Windchill Chart here.
From Optional Thin Liner Gloves to Mandatory Merino Wool Liner Gloves
Similar to above, frostbite in the fingers can happen within 30 minutes as well. Throw on a liner glove spun with merino wool to safely protect exposed extremities. These gloves won't be bulky and many use touch technology for quick smartphone access.
