VO2 Max Testing
You’re not one-dimensional or generic. Your training shouldn’t be either. As the St Louis summer heat sets in, it can be difficult to know how far and how fast you should run. What’s the best pace for me? How do I adjust my training for the weather? Am I pushing too hard? Not enough? Heart rate training can set your mind at ease. By knowing exactly what heart rate you should maintain for each of your runs, you can focus your cardiovascular training—without having to worry about the weather.
So how do you find your ideal heart rate zones? You just take the number 220 and subtract your age, right? Not exactly. That old equation is what we call “dart board” accurate. (Read: Not accurate.) We are all unique. Therefore, we all have different heart rate zones.
A VO2 max test will give you your cardiovascular fingerprint. It will tell you where you are excelling and where you need to tweak or adjust your training to better prepare for race day. And you will know you are doing what’s best for you—no matter what Mother Nature throws your way.
