Brewing a Good Cup of Tea
On cold winter days, you’ll find me sipping tea at my desk during the day and in the evenings after dinner. It’s soothing, comforting, and warming to my body and belly. Plus, it’s filled with lots of antioxidants.
There are so many wonderful teas on the market these days – green, black, white, rooibos, and herbal, as well as bagged or loose tea – so no matter your preference, there’s a flavor and style of tea out there for you.
So what’s my trick to brewing a good cup of tea so that it has the true flavor of tea, yet doesn’t taste like tap water?
Follow these easy steps:
1. Start with fresh cold water. If your tap water has an unpleasant smell or taste, use filtered or purified water.
2. Pull out your favorite mug.
3. Heat water using your preferred method. I have an electric water kettle that heats up my water fairly quick, but at work, I’ll just use the microwave.
4. Use the correct water to tea ratio. For 1 tea bag or 1 teaspoon of loose leaf tea, use about 8 ounces of water. If your tea is too strong, use more water; if you tea is too weak, use less next time.
5. Pour heated water into your favorite mug with the tea bag or over tea leaves in your favorite tea pot with a fine mesh sieve.
5. Green tea is a little more delicate than black tea, so steep green teas for about 3 minutes and black tea for about 4-5 minutes before removing the bag or sieve. Steeping tea too long can bring out bitterness.
6. Sip and enjoy!
