Kirsten Sass
Amateur Triathlete, Guide, Mother, Physician Assistant

Fleet Feet is proud to sponsor Kirsten Sass—an inspiring local athlete, dedicated mom, and world-class competitor. Her journey from small-town beginnings to international multisport success is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and community.
Kirsten Sass is an amateur triathlete from McKenzie, Tennessee. She made her triathlon debut in 1999 because her late father, Volker Winkler, signed her up and put her on one of his old bikes. Sass finished last in her division at that race (the Memphis in May Triathlon), but fell in love with the sport, encouraged by the support of the other competitors. She trained and raced with her father all over the world for the next twenty years - the two did multiple races from sprint distance to Ironmans (including Hawai’i) together.
Sass’s racing expanded over the years to include other multisport events including duathlon (run-bike-run), draft-legal racing (duathlon and triathlon), aquabike (swim-bike), and aquathlon (swim-run). In 2017 she began racing as a guide for visually impaired athletes, and made it all the way to race in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics guiding for Amy Dixon - an elite paratriathlete. She has continued to guide, and has most currently been racing with McClain Hermes, a multiple time Paralympic swimmer who has started racing triathlons.

Outside of triathlon, Sass works as a Physician Assistant in a family practice setting. She is a mother of two - AlyssaBella (15) and Sebastian (14). Her husband, Jeff, is also a triathlete but is better known as Elvis for his choice of attire while cheering Sass on at races around the world.
