Our Winter Running Guide
by the Fleet Feet Nebraska team
With the first major snowfall of the season, we want to discuss how to stay safe (and warm!) while running in the winter! Here are our 5 major tips:
Layer up!
- For your base layer, wear a thin, moisture-resistant shirt and tights to wick away sweat and prevent overheating
- Add an insulating layer for warmth, such as a fleece sweatshirt or quarter zip
- Finally, put on a windproof and waterproof shell to defend against snow, sleet and wind
Cover your extremities
- Wear a beanie or headband to protect your ears
- Invest in running gloves or mittens (we recommend the Nathan HyperNight Convertible mitts)
- Consider wearing wool socks or layering two pairs to keep your toes toasty
Find your footing
- Find shoes with a good amount traction to reduce your risk of slipping
- For especially icy or snowy conditions, wear ice grips over your shoes, such as those from Yaktrax
Stay visible
- Wear high-vis, reflective clothing to ensure you are seen by drivers, bikers, and other runners
- Wear a headlamp
- Consider purchasing a light-up vest to maximize visibility
Warm Up
- Cold muscles are more susceptible to strain and injury
- Take extra time to stretch and warm up your muscles
- Dynamic stretches, such as lunges or squats, will help increase bloodflow prior to your run
