We are continually amazed at the nominees each week! So many people doing so much good! Congratulations to our Week Three Community Champions! Thank you for what you do each day! Each Champion will receive a pair of Hoka shoes, thanks to the generous support of Hoka One One!
It's not too late to nominate someone. We will recognize another group of Champions next week!
Charlotte Amweg
Kitty Walker made the nomination saying that "From day one when the corona virus kicked in; Charlene didn’t wait for it to become an issue in SC. She immediately organized a small group (practicing social distancing of course) and began making masks to donate to hospitals, assisted living facilities, and the elderly. Some of the supplies are donated by Jo Ann’s craft shop but she uses a lot of her own supplies and does all the sewing and quality control. Charlene spends countless hours volunteering her time."

Charlene: Swimming
Tim Fonkert
was nominated by Taea Fonkert who stated the following: "He is working overtime every day just to keep up with the needs of the profession. Unfortunately this pandemic has made his profession busy. Him and one other coworker are the only two at his work who weren’t exposed to the virus so he is having to makeup for those missing workers. But he never complains. He is so dedicated and determined to give every family the best service. His heart is so big and so deserving of recognition, recognition that he never gets."
FF: How long have you been working in your current field?
Tim: I have been a funeral director for 20 years and also a crematory manager the last 4 years for J Henry Stuhr Funeral Home.
FF: What is your favorite part of your job?
Tim: Taking care of the dead to help the living.
FF: What is the most challenging part of your job under the current circumstances?
Tim: Not being able to comfort the family face to face. This job is usually giving a hug when they need it. It’s letting them be surrounded by their loved ones. Its everything we can’t do during this time. These impersonal interactions hurt us both. I also have to use precautions to keep everyone safe including my family.
FF: What is your favorite activity to stay healthy and relieve stress?
Tim: I love to go for walks with my family and go fishing!
Leigh Ann Garrett
was nominated by her friend Peggy Szteiter who wrote: "Leigh Ann has gone above & beyond to coordinate and co-create a group called ‘Feeding Our Heroes-SC’ along with working her regular job & distance learning with her 2 elementary aged daughters. Feeding Our Heroes has raised over $30,000 in 6 weeks and provided over 500 meals each week from LOCAL restaurants helping them stay afloat, while feeding those hospital staffers on the frontline. The group has & is working with 7 area hospitals!! Leigh Ann deserves recognition & appreciation for all she and her 2 friends have done for the Charleston area community during this time."
FF: How long have you been working in your current field?
Leigh Ann: 17 years in nonprofit! Hard to believe it.
FF: What is your favorite part of your job?
Leigh Ann: Meeting amazing & inspirational community members and colleagues. The lowcountry is blessed with so many ‘helpers.’
FF: What is the most challenging part of your job under the current circumstances?
Leigh Ann: Balancing work with being home and helping my elementary aged daughters with e-learning and staying mentally healthy!
FF: What is your favorite activity to stay healthy and relieve stress?
Leigh Ann: Recently it’s been kayaking with a friend or bike riding with my girls. Anything outdoors & in the sunshine.
Jennifer Meyer
was nominated by John Painter who shared..."Jenn provides compassionate and skilled care to veterans at the end of life. She communicates with and journeys alongside their families throughout their final days. In these days of limited social interaction, her job is more complex as much of it has to be done at a distance. Despite the distance, she continues to convey compassionate care to patients and families alike. Jenn loves to run, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to honor my co-worker."
FF: Tell us a little bit about where you work/what you do:
Jennifer: I have been a nurse practitioner in geriatrics and palliative medicine for 15 years. I currently work at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.
FF: What is your favorite part of your job?
Jennifer: The best part of my job is getting to know and support our veterans and their family during treatment of serious medical illness, as well as, at the end of their life.
FF: What is the most challenging part of your job under the current circumstances?
Jennifer: The most challenging part of my job during these circumstances is having to perform most of my job at a distance. So much of what I do requires close, face to face communication with veterans and their loved ones, especially as they near the end of their life.
FF: What is your favorite activity to stay healthy and relieve stress?
Jennifer: My favorite activity to stay healthy and to relieve stress is running or going on long walks with my children.
