Meet Katie:

If you've been a part of the running scene in Nashville, you may recognize Katie Prevost, who's gearing up for her fourth Boston Marathon on April 21. We caught up to ask her about her running journey, what she loves about Nashville running and what keeps her motivated.

Fleet Feet Nashville: When and how did you start runinng?

Katie: I played competitive sports growing up, which meant running was either part of summer conditioning or punishment during practice. I think it took some time for running to shift from punishment to enjoyment so it wasn't until the end of college when I started running for fun. I studied abroad during my senior year of college and several of my classmates were runners. We would go on long runs to kill time and run to explore other European cities/countries that we visited. That semester solidified my love of running (and travel) and it’s been a part of my life since then. Running has looked different in different seasons of my life, but I always come back to it.

FF: What do you love most about the Nashville running community?

KP: The Nashville running community is incredibly welcoming, kind, supportive, and more vibrant than ever. There's a club or group in every part of town for everybody these days which is pretty cool.  I also love that the relationships are so much deeper than just running. I can think of several examples of the running community raising support, providing meals, and just loving on a runner (and their family) in need.

FFN: What keeps you motivated?

KP: I am goal oriented by nature, so I almost always have running goals. I love having a race on the calendar to give structure to training and help keep me motivated, but sometimes my goal is take a break from road running to spend time on the trails or get stronger in the gym. I've also found over the years that running is always best done in community. I sign up for a lot of the same races as my friends so we can share miles, encourage each other sometimes comeserate. I hit a mental wall this training block and several of my running buddies have pulled me through by accompanying me on runs, sending encouraging texts, and also helping me keep proper perspective. I genuinely love running and the training process, but sharing my love of the sport and all miles during a training block with friends helps keep me motivated.

FFN: What’s your favorite route/place to run in Nashville ?

KP: I have two! Percy Warner or the Grassland route

FFN: What’s your favorite workout?

KP: Hard to pick! I love fast combination workouts on the track like 1ks and 300s or 800s and 400s. Favorite road workout is alternating threshold and marathon pace.

FFN: Last but not least, tell us about your coaching business; how can people contact you?

KP: I love running and the training process. When I first started running half and full-marathons, I coached myself because there weren’t many running coaches out there (or maybe I just couldn't find them because social media was limited in those days). I read a lot of books and tried to immerse myself into running so I could write plans for myself and strategize for races. It worked great in my early days of running. When I came back to running in 2021 after about 5 years off, I decided to hire a coach because I felt like I had more potential and wanted to see what I was capable of. I didn't think I could challenge myself much more without some guidance. Several of my friends encouraged me to start coaching in 2024 and one shared about a certification course through UESCA that interested me. I took the course last fall and started coaching several runners this year. Coaching is very much a part time job for me, and I always plan to keep my roster small so I can give my athletes the attention needed. I have the most experience racing and training for distance races (half and full marathons), but really love the 5k. I am open to taking on more athletes whose goals and desires align with my skill set; however, I am selective because I want to ensure we are a good fit for each other.
