Making It Safe
By far, my favorite moment of the day is when I go for a run. I love solo running because it is a time for me to go out on my own, set a pace, plot a route and just run. This is when I can reflect on my upcoming day or week but other times I completely zone out. However, as I think more about Fleet Feet's upcoming event "Art & Sole" and the beneficiary organization, Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire, I realize those runs have put me at unnecessary risk. After the recent "Safe on the Run: Self Defense" class, I know I need to be aware of my surroundings. During my first run after the class, all the scenarios that were presented flashed through my mind. But I wasn't frightened. Even after that brief session, I felt better prepared than before. Having a few basic self-defense tactics at my disposal and more situational awareness made me feel more in control of my run. These lessons will also stay with me in my everyday activities. No matter the situation, it never hurts to scan your surroundings to locate any possible dangers and prepare yourself with your next steps if there is trouble. Just like running, the more you practice it, the easier it becomes. But I'm not saying after one class, I am the new superhero Running Woman or anything, but it's a step in the right direction. I would encourage everyone to take a class similar to the one offered over the weekend.
Even better, join the Fleet Feet crew this Thursday, September 29th for our 2nd Annual Art & Sole event. Already, several beautifully decorated shoe soles were turned in that will be auctioned off to several lucky winners. If you can't make it, please visit the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire's website to learn more about the many different programs they offer for support and education, and how you can help your community with them.
