We Never Regret the Run
When I went to bad last night, I had every intention of getting up this morning for a short shakeout run. When my alarm went off this morning, bright and early, I rethought those intentions…the bed was just feeling too darn good, and I had just run 20 miles yesterday (if you want to skip all the words after the “…” part of the sentence and simply insert “excuses to follow”, that is both factual and fine by me). Anywho, I rolled back over, fully intending to revisit the Land of Nod, but the dogs weren’t having it; once they know you’re awake, it’s all downhill from there—pointy snouts were all sorts of in my face, literally (“hey guy, I’m going to keep using your eye sockets as a pin-cushion until you let me outside to do my business, then put some food in my bowl; you’re awfully swell for understanding”). So when I stepped outside and felt the cool, comfortable weather…well, there was no turning back. I hadn’t left myself much time to log miles, but a quick jaunt was certainly better than none; as much as I’ve been boo-hooing the hot temps this summer served up, it would have seemed mighty hypocritical of me had I not taken advantage of a nice, cool morning. After all, “I really regret that run”…said no one, ever.
Other things you’re not liable to regret:
1.) Anyone that ran last Saturday’s Tunnel to Towers 5K (and there were 1200+ folks) had a blast; I invite you, a full year in advance, to come out and experience the fun and reverence the race will once again offer next year.
2.) This weekend’s YMCA Heart of Savannah 5K is yet another race raising funds for a terrific cause (in this case, a free 12-week program meant to support cancer survivors as they get back on their feet and strive for stronger, healthier lives). Come out and support the YMCAs of the lowcountry in this pursuit on Saturday, beginning at 9:00am!
3.) Deep-fried oreos. Just trust me on this one; I’ve always steered you straight before.
Get your miles in (whether you truly want to get up and do so or it’s your dogs that made you…), keeping in mind that Mother Nature is a fickle mistress that may steal our cool, comfy temps back from us just as we’re starting to get used to them. But hot or cold, rainy or humid, just be sure to enjoy the run and all the benefits that come along with it; never forget that we never regret the run, and that we are blessed to have the opportunity each and every time we lace up.
