A Running Start was founded in May, 2004, by Sorita Averill-Fitzgerald, an avid runner, marathoner, cyclist and triathlete. Sorita moved to Pennsylvania in 1987 and began her career in corporate America. In 2004, she left the corporate world to pursue her dream of opening a customer-friendly, service-oriented running specialty store.
A Running Start has since become a leader in the retail running business by offering professional service and top quality merchandise for runners and walkers. In January of 2018, A Running Start entered a unique partnership with the Fleet Feet brand. Fleet Feet is a corporation that encompasses 275 locally owned and operated running specialty stores across the United States. ARS joined the Fleet Feet Family and became Fleet Feet West Reading. This unique and exciting partnership allows Fleet Feet West Reading to provide the Berks County running community with a wider array of products, services and features.
* A Running Start has been awarded as a Top 50 Run Specialty Store on three separate occasions by Formula4Media and Competitor Magazine
* As a Fleet Feet Store we have also been rewarded with a Top 50 Run Specialty Store in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
