3 Tips for Beginners on Training to Run a 5k
Starting our No Boundaries 5k/10k Training Program Soon?
Here are 3 tips from Coach Gracie
I’ve been lucky enough to be a Coach with Fleet Feet’s training program for the past five years. As an athlete and coach, I’m constantly learning and working towards being a better runner. Here are my tips for our No Boundaries, begin to run program:
Get the Right Gear
Running is a get-up-and-go sport. You will be able to get up and go faster, without pain, and have a better run when you have the right gear on. Don’t underestimate the power of a properly fitted shoe. The best gear is the kind you don’t have to think about. Spend some time with an outfitter to determine the best shoe for your foot. Remember gear goes beyond shoes. Investing in a great sports bra, socks, shorts, and hat has also made a huge impact on my performance and overall comfort.

Start Where You Are
When I first signed up for Fleet Feet’s training programs, I couldn’t run a few minutes without being winded. I remember frantically emailing the head coach saying I couldn’t do the program. I was out of shape, non-runner, and couldn’t possibly run a mile!! The head coach told me to start where I was. Run as far as I could and then walk. After following this advice, I was able to run more and further. I eventually did end up running a mile and many more after that. The best advice I can give any runner is to not be overwhelmed by what you can’t do and focus on what you can do. You will get there!
Find What Motivates You
For any new runner or runner coming back from injury, life event, or anything that made them stop running, getting started can be hard. Find what motivates you to run and stick with it. I’m a sucker for races - well medals and race t-shirts but racing is my big motivator and keeps me showing up and practicing. For some, it’s having an accountability buddy you run with every week and doing homework runs together. For others, it’s the physical benefits of running like feeling healthy and strong. Once you find your motivation, whatever it is to keep you running, follow it! “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle
