Enjoying the Moment: Local Chicago Runner Heads to Orlando for his 3rd Big Marathon (IYKYK)
In the bustling world of marathons, there's a local Chicago runner with a remarkable story. Kevin Havel, self-proclaimed ‘semi-retired’ runner is gearing up for his third big race that comes every four years (if you know, you know.)
Kevin's running journey began at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, where he had many top 5 finishes at the IHSA State Cross Country Meet, along with some State titles in track and field. He then went on to run collegiately at Stanford, where solidified his identity as a distance runner. "I like to run, I like to run hard, and I like to run long," he says.
Unsure if he’d continue running after college, his first attempt at the marathon distance actually came while still competing for Standard. He wanted to see what he was capable of while he still had the fitness of a Division 1 runner.
His first real attempt in a marathon race setting was at the 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. He was able to start just a few rows back from the pros, but unlike them whose minds were on prize money and contract obligations, Kevin’s mindset was "I'm here to have a great time." It was a Homecoming for Kevin. Friends, family, and loved ones packed the course, cheering him on. He made all the rookie mistakes – no nutrition, no gels, went out too fast – but still wound up running a 2:26 marathon.
After moving back to Chicago post college, Kevin found a group of like minded individuals and a coach who believed in him through the Second City Track Club. It was here first that his coach put the idea in Kevin’s head that he could qualify for the trials, and with that external belief behind him, Kevin went out and did it, qualifying in 2016 (and later on again in 2020.)
For Kevin, it's all about walking the balance between being competitive and relishing the moment. Kevin calls running his 'moving meditation.' It's a space where he finds peace, clears his mind, and embraces the sheer joy of the run. This meditative aspect is crucial in maintaining a healthy balance between his professional and athletic pursuits. Even his colleagues know that running is integral to Kevin’s life. They support him fully in his training, and even joke that know that he has to get a run every everyday, or he’ll be ‘run-gry’ – the equivalent of ‘hangry’ but for runners.
Despite a busy schedule, he manages to make time for what he loves – a testament to his dedication and prioritization. With a smile, Kevin shares, "I just make time for it. It's like brushing your teeth." His ability to maintain a consistent running routine even during frequent work travels showcases the simplicity and accessibility of his chosen lifestyle.
While he may not be caught up on books or TV shows, Kevin happily acknowledges the choices he's made. "Work, run, eat – that's my choice, but I like that choice," he concludes, highlighting the satisfaction that comes from pursuing what brings him true joy.
As Kevin Havel laces up for Saturday’s race in Orlando, he not only carries the weight of his training but also the joy and fulfillment that running brings to his life. In a world often driven by competition, Kevin's story serves as a reminder that the journey is just as important as the destination.
