Meet the New Gatorade Endurance Formula
Fleet Feet Sports Chicago is one of the first to get the news that the Gatorade Endurance electrolyte formula is getting a makeover.
The specialized sports drink is designed to provide hydration and fuel during prolonged training and racing when fluid and electrolyte losses can be significant. The new formulation contains no artificial sweetener or flavors and has a lighter flavor designed for athletes training and racing. In keeping in line with no artificial ingredients, it also uses Beta-Carotene for the color. In addition, Gatorade Endurance Formula now offers a multi-carbohydrate blend to help endurance athletes maintain performance and lower the risk of stomach discomfort during a hard training session or race.
One 8-oz. serving of the new and improved Gatorade Endurance Formula provides 14 grams of carbohydrate, 200mg of sodium, 90mg of potassium and 50 calories, and is currently available in powder.
The new formula means more to you than you think to Chicago runners. The following local races will carry the new formula along the course.
- F^3 Lake Half Marathon
- Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle
- Chicago Spring Half Marathon
- Rock 'n' Roll Chicago
- CARA Ready to Run 20 Miler
- Chicago Half Marathon
- Bank of America Chicago Marathon
- Chicago Triathlon
Endurance Formula continues to contain nearly twice the sodium and more than three times the potassium of traditional Gatorade to help maintain hydration, help maintain proper fluid balance and help replace the key electrolytes lost in sweat during these occasions. The new formulation will come in Lemon-Lime, Orange and a new flavor offering, Cherry.
As Gatorade Endurance continues to listen to endurance athletes’ feedback and study the science available through their partnership with Gatorade Sports Science Institute, they will continue to put the athlete first and support them throughout their training and race journey.
As a reminder, the Gatorade Endurance line is not sold in mass grocery or convenient stores. It is sold exclusively at sport specialty retailers including Fleet Feet Sports Chicago at our Old Town, Lincoln Square, South Loop, and Elmhurst locations and online i.e. GatoradeEndurance.com.
Common Questions
How is this new G Endurance Formula different from the original Endurance Formulation?
- Gatorade Endurance Formula was uniquely formulated to deliver fuel, fluid and electrolytes to endurance athletes during prolonged training and racing. The new formulation of Gatorade Endurance Formula provides the same proven hydration and fueling benefits as the original.
- Athlete taste preferences vary, and Gatorade Endurance Formula was reformulated to have a lighter taste. Due to prolonged training, endurance athletes often call out flavor fatigue as a common issue. The reformulated Endurance Formula is meant to be more palatable for endurance training and racing, and now comes in a new flavor, for added variety.
- To meet the evolving preferences of endurance athletes we’re proud that the reformulated Gatorade Endurance Formula contains no artificial flavors and sweeteners and uses beta-carotene for the color.
Will you still carry the old version?
- No, starting June 21, Gatorade Endurance Formula will only be available in the new formulation. Beginning July 22, the new formulation will appear on more than 300 races courses across the U.S.
Why does the new Gatorade Endurance Formula taste less sweet?
- By nature of their sport, endurance athletes must fuel more often, and for longer periods of time, than other athletes. As a result, we’ve learned that endurance athletes are often more sensitive to the sweet taste of sports drinks.
- From this insight, Gatorade Endurance worked to create a lighter, less sweet tasting Gatorade Endurance Formula, to be more palatable to endurance athletes who are training for prolonged periods of time.
- The new formulation tastes less sweet due to the new carb blend, specifically the maltodextrin ingredient, as well as the absence of artificial flavors.
Does that mean that Gatorade Endurance Formula contains less sugar than it used to?
- Gatorade Endurance Formula contains the same carbohydrate fuel amount as the previous formulation but the sugar levels are different as a result of the new carbohydrate blend.
