Running for a Cause: Jennifer B for Team PAWS
Jennifer Bartkowiak began her running journey by running 5ks, but in 2021, she decided to take on the challenge of a marathon. Now, she’s preparing to run the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon as a charity runner for PAWS Chicago — a no-kill animal shelter whose mission is to build a no-kill community and transform animal welfare in Chicago.
To prepare, Jennifer is training with the Fleet Feet Training x Chicago Endurance Sports Summer Training Program. Running with the program has pushed her outside her comfort zone and connected her with other runners across the Chicagoland community. Her favorite part of training is that it gets her outdoors, enjoying the trails and watching the trees change with the seasons. She also looks forward to post-run breakfasts as a reward.
Like any marathoner, Jennifer faces challenges along the way. On tough training days, she reminds herself of the feeling that comes after a run — no matter how tired she is, running always leaves her feeling better.
For Peanut, for Miles, and Team PAWS
Jennifer’s decision to run for PAWS Chicago is a personal one. She is dedicating this year’s race to her late cat, Peanut, whom she rescued 12 years ago. Peanut was a sweet cat who loved nothing more than finding the perfect spot to sunbathe.
A few years ago, Peanut was diagnosed with kidney failure. At first, the vet predicted she would only have about six months to live — but Peanut was a fighter. She continued to bring love into Jennifer’s life for three more years. She passed away on October 12th - the day before Jennifer was set to run the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
Jennifer was devastated by the loss of Peanut. However, just three days later, a friend called with unexpected news — a cat had crawled into his car engine and needed a home. That was the day Miles became part of Jennifer’s family.
Miles brought joy back into Jennifer’s life during a difficult time, and he continues to fill her with energy and happiness.
Jennifer is running for Team PAWS, for Peanut, for Miles, and for all the animals still waiting for their forever homes. Adopting and helping animals is deeply important to her, and she wants to do her part to support PAWS in finding loving homes for as many animals as possible in our community.
She hopes people understand the incredible work PAWS Chicago does every day to help animals and build a no-kill community. Countless pets are waiting for families to adopt them. When you rescue an animal, you’re not only saving one life, but you’re also creating space for another animal in need.
