Running for a Cause: Teresa?s Journey to Finding Purpose on the Path

Every runner has a unique story, and Teresa’s journey is no exception. Shaped by life’s twists and turns, her passion for running emerged from a mix of city living, retirement, and a deeply personal desire to give back. What began as a way to navigate Chicago’s busy South Loop eventually grew into a meaningful pursuit, fueled by her connection to Lurie Children’s Hospital. In this Q&A, Teresa shares how she found joy in running, what motivates her to train, and why representing Lurie Children’s as a marathon charity runner fills her with pride. Her story is a testament to the power of running to inspire, connect, and make an impact.

Q: When did you first start running?

Teresa: I first started running in my twenties, but didn't really enjoy it that much. I played squash and did a lot of cycling over the years. But when I moved to the South Loop in 2013, and had to compete for bike path space with runners, rather than get frustrated whenever I went out, I decided to join them! But it wasn't until the pandemic which happened just as I retired that I really got serious about running -- or shuffling, as I called it back then!

Q: What is your favorite part about running/training?

Teresa: Being outside, having almost infinite choices for a run, and not needing a lot of equipment.

Q: Why did you choose to fundraise for Lurie Children's when selecting a marathon charity partner?

Teresa: In 2011 my son Colin was diagnosed with a brain germinoma and was successfully treated at Lurie Children's (Children's Memorial at that time). The superb care and attention he received, the quality and humanity of the doctors, nurses and support staff, was outstanding, and I will always, always be grateful. And so when it came time to choose a charity partner for fundraising, there was no question it would be Lurie Children's!

Q: What does getting to represent Lurie Children's mean to you?

Teresa: I feel enormous pride in representing such an incredible, children-focused hospital.

Q: If you could leave everyone with one piece of information about Lurie Children's, what would it be?

Teresa: Lurie Children's not only provides outstanding care for very ill children; they also enable parents who are going through a terribly dark and frightening time to know that their child is in the very best of hands.
