Running for Mental Health: Bria Wright and Her Path with Team NoStigmas
Running began as a fun challenge for Bria Wright while training with her aunt for the Soldier Field 10-Miler. After just one training cycle, she fell in love with the “runner’s high” and the therapeutic outlet the sport provided. Though she stepped away from running in 2018, she found her way back in 2024 during a time of personal hardship. Now, Bria is preparing for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon as a charity partner, raising funds for a cause close to her heart: NoStigmas.
From Bonding to Resilience: The Start of Bria’s Running Journey
Bria’s running journey began a decade ago, when her aunt, Theresa Mullin, invited her to train for the 2015 Soldier Field 10-Miler. What started as a bonding experience quickly became a therapeutic outlet. Bria cherished the time spent on the run, sharing uninterrupted conversations with Theresa and leaving their emotions out on the trail. With Theresa’s support and encouragement, Bria continued pursuing the sport, eventually completing two Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathons.
What Bria loves most about running is the “runner’s high” — that powerful moment when your body begs you to stop, but you push through anyway. It's in those moments that she feels her strongest, reminded that she’s alive, resilient, and capable of overcoming anything life throws her way.
Running as an Outlet for Healing
Bria took a break from running after finishing her last half marathon in 2018. Recently, she found her way back to the sport, reminded of just how healing running can be.
In September 2024, Bria lost her first cousin, Tatanisha Jackson, as a result of her son's battle with mental illness. Tatanisha was like a sister to Bria, and her passing had a deep and lasting impact. As Bria navigated her grief and continued to support her family, she realized she needed a healthy outlet to help her process everything alongside her routine therapy appointments. That’s when she turned back to running.
Running for Awareness: Supporting NoStigmas
Just as Bria started to get back into running in 2024, she began to see the many inspirational stories being shared from the Bank of America Chicago Marathon charity runners on social media. When she came across NoStigmas and their mission to support those impacted by mental illness, something clicked. She knew it was the exact cause she needed to rally behind.
For Bria, getting to represent Team NoStigmas on one of the world’s biggest racing stages is a reminder that there’s always a light at the end of a dark tunnel. NoStigmas’ mission is to make sure no one has to face mental health challenges alone. They work to raise awareness around mental health and suicide prevention, while helping individuals access the care that’s right for them. NoStigmas endeavours to foster an environment of inclusion and empowerment, helping to create a world with No Stigmas.
Bria is proud to raise money and awareness for a cause that’s so close to her heart. Her friends, family, and supporters continue to be inspired by her strength and her journey.
Bria would like to remind everyone that it's okay to not be okay. No matter what you’ve gone through or where you come from, there are safe spaces for you to talk through whatever you’re feeling, and resources to help you get better. NoStigmas is one of those safe spaces!
Help Support NoStigmas at the Blue Jean Mile
NoStigmas works to raise awareness and resources for those struggling with mental illness. Currently, NoStigmas is working on a project to raise funds for creating a mental health training program specifically for middle and high school-aged kids, as many unborn mental health conditions begin to develop during this time in people’s lives.
To support this mission, and in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’ve teamed up with ASICS to host the Blue Jean Mile. Meet us at Lake Shore Park track on May 22nd at 6pm to run or race a mile in your favorite pair of blue jeans. Afterwards, enjoy post-run treats courtesy of ASICS. Plus — bring a pair of jeans to donate and be entered to win a free pair of ASICS shoes.
All proceeds for the event will go to NoStigmas and their mission to bring community and support to those dealing with mental illness.
