Running with Resilience: What Running with Breast Cancer is Like, through the Eyes of 'Venados' Member Faby

In the vibrant tapestry of the running world, every pair of shoes tells a story, but some narratives echo far beyond the pavement. Faby, a spirited member of the running community and the Venados family, shares her remarkable journey of courage, resilience, and the unyielding spirit that carried her through the New York Marathon and beyond.

A Chance Encounter with Venados

In the annals of Faby's running history, Lucy and Ruby, two faces that would become pivotal, entered the scene in 2020. Little did she know that this introduction would weave into the fabric of her triumph over a formidable adversary—breast cancer.

Discovering Strength Amidst Adversity

September 10th, 2018, marked a turning point for Faby. A small lump in her right breast led her on a challenging path, eventually diagnosed with breast cancer. Determined to not let this hurdle thwart her dreams, Faby was in the midst of training for the NYC Marathon.

Running Through the Storm

The juxtaposition of chemotherapy and marathon training might seem counterintuitive, but Faby refused to relinquish her passion. Two weeks before the marathon, she received her first chemo treatment, navigating the unknown terrain of side effects and physical tolls. Despite the setbacks, she ran with a heart full of gratitude, finishing in 4 hours and 47 minutes—a testament to her indomitable spirit.

The Support of the Venados Family

In the crucible of adversity, the Venados family and the broader running community became pillars of strength. The inexplicable love and camaraderie among strangers turned friends turned family served as a powerful support system. Faby found inspiration in the stories of fellow athletes, realizing that she was not alone in her battle.

Four Years Cancer-Free: A Celebration of Triumph

July marked the celebration of Faby's fourth year of being cancer-free. A poignant milestone, it symbolizes not only victory over cancer but also the enduring strength that resides within her.

Empowering Others: Advice and Advocacy

For those hesitant to face the possibility of a cancer diagnosis, Faby imparts a crucial message: early detection is key. She advocates for building a robust support system and mental preparedness, emphasizing the progress in cancer research while acknowledging the increasing prevalence of the disease.

Beyond Victory: Navigating Post-Cancer Challenges

Faby sheds light on a lesser-discussed aspect of the cancer journey—the emotional aftermath. Winning the battle against cancer doesn't erase the lasting impact it leaves. Fear of recurrence and emotional vulnerability persist, underscoring the importance of ongoing support for survivors.

In the story of Faby and Venados, running isn't just about crossing finish lines—it's a testament to the human spirit's capacity to endure, triumph, and inspire. As she continues her journey, Faby exemplifies that every step forward is not merely a run but a stride toward empowerment, advocacy, and a life well-lived.

Join Faby and the rest of the Venados team this Wednesday, October 25th at 7pm at Pizza Cantina in Pilsen. Runners are encourage to wear pink and will hear words from two of Venado's members who are breast cancer survivors. RSVP here.
