The Fitness App Strava Reveals Where Chicagoans Run the Most
We're a week late but this is some pretty cool data.
As first reported by the Chicago Sun Times, the fitness app we all know and love, Strava, used their data to create a heatmap showing where us Chicagoans like to run most often.
Unveiled in recent months, the map from Strava spans the globe, not just Chicago, and is built on one billion activities logged by Strava users who’s movements are tracked by the app, even military bases, which got them into a bit of trouble. But no need to worry, no individual data can be pulled from this.
Coming as a surprise to no one, the map glows like a lantern, showing that our city parks and Lakefront Trail take the cake as the most popular running destinations in the city.
As pointed out by Curbed, if you look closely, you can also see a glowing outline of the Chicago Marathon route.
The app doesn't include street names so we did the best we could to label some of the more popular routes, streets, and parks. Take a look below.
The newly redone Chicago Riverwalk glows the brightest on the entire map. You can also see the Chicago Marathon course outline. With over 40,000 runners its unclear how many runners were actually using the app.
Humboldt Park is the most trafficked park while Clark Street, Milwaukee Avenue, and Lincoln Avenue are the most trafficked streets. Oak Park is the most notable neighborhood outside of the immediate city.
Up north, the public parks reign supreme. You can clearly see the Montrose Avenue track near the harbor as well. Trail running is on trend as outlined by Schiller Woods and Bunker Hill.
If you're not on Strava, we highly recommend it. We've got a Strava page for our paid running club, the Fleet Feet Sports Chicago & Nike Racing Team and plan to create one for our public running club starting in March.
