Avoid Race Nutrition "Gut Rot" With Tailwind Nutrition
It's no secret that figuring out nutrition for running is hard work. That's why we made an all-inclusive informational blog about it. It explains why there are so many option for nutrition ranging form drinks, gels, bars, chews, hydrogels, and more.
Everyone is different in the way they digest and use sugars, especially while running. This is why there is a need for these options. Figuring out what works best for you takes trial and error. We've all gone through it. The important thing is to not get discouraged if you have a bad run where nutrition is the culprit. Take note and make edits for next time. Repeat.
Additionally, working on your overall nutrition can be helpful too. What you eat the few days before a big run can help or hurt your performance. Working with a certified sports nutritionist can help you in that area.
In 2018, we've been expanding our nutrition line-up to encompass more of what you've been requesting from us. This includes products that aren't traditional in terms of sports nutrition. We're always working on finding cleaner sports nutrition as well. Fewer ingredients. No added chemicals.
Enter Tailwind Nutrition.
This one has been on our radar for a while, and we finally had enough of you want it in our stores. Tailwind Nutrition was born out of an ultramarathoners kitchen after he had a total "gut-bomb" at the end of a long race. Eventually using himself and friends as guinea pigs he developed a formula for endurance athletes that met caloric, hydration, and electolyte needs in a liquid format and without upsetting stomach or taste buds.
You probably have some questions so we'll try to answer them below.
What are the ingredients?
Non-GMO Dextrose (Glucose) Non-GMO Sucrose, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Sea Salt, Organic Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Magnesium Citrate, Calcium Carbonate.
Tailwind Nutrition is gluten free, vegan, soy free, and dairy free.
How is it different from other sports drinks on the market?
1. It's an all-in-one sports drink. While competitors often use just two of these categories, Tailwind combines complete fuel, hydration, and electrolytes in a tasty drink that won’t turn your stomach into a brick.
2. Better absorption. Tailwind’s glucose/sucrose fuel takes advantage of how our bodies absorb nutrients. The combination of Tailwind’s fuel, electrolytes, and water has a synergistic effect, allowing the body to absorb more of each. Once in the bloodstream, the glucose in Tailwind fuels muscles directly, allowing athletes to go longer at higher intensities.
3. Easy on your gut. Not all stomachs can handle the sticky sweetness or hard-to-digest molecules found in most nutrition products. We’ve been there, and we’re just grateful there’s only one video. Sipping Tailwind provides steady, small doses of fuel that pass right through the stomach. The composition of Tailwind’s fuel matches what the gut is made to absorb, so Tailwind enters your system quickly, without taxing the digestive tract.
4. We get it that performance matters more than price when it comes to nutrition, but why pay more than what you need to? Check out some math for a 10-hour race (2500 calories at 250/hour):
Tailwind: 2500 calories. Tailwind = $17.50. Electrolytes = included. Total = $17.50
Other nutrition: 1600 calories from drink = $11.20. 1 gel/hr (900 cal) = $14. 2 electrolyte pills per hour = $3.40. Total = $28.60
I'm sold, how do I use it?
Each serving is 100 calories. For endurance workouts mix 2-3 scoops/24oz of water per hour. Adjust to your personal calorie needs (remember, everyone is different) during training, using hunger as a guide. When it's dialed in, you'll feel satisfied and energetic, not hungry or full. On hot days, keep the same caloric intake per hour, increase water. To use in combination with other foods, reduce Tailwind intake by calories you're consuming elsewhere to avoid overloading the cut. For shorter workouts (<2 hr), you can use less Tailwind to taste.
