Scott Jurek Breaks Appalachian Trail Speed Record in a Photo Finish
Typically breaking a record by 3 hours and 13 minutes would not be considered a photo finish. However, when the record attempt is the length of the entire 2,180 miles of the Appalachian Trail and it takes 46 days, coming down to the last few hours is excruciatingly close.
Scott Jurek is one of the most accomplished ultra marathoners in the world. He has won many of the most prestigious ultras including Western States Endurance Run 7 times in a row. But Scott is more than just a great runner, he’s a great guy. Scott is known as one of the friendliest athletes out there. Scott was welcoming to all of his supporters. As if covering nearly 50 miles a day, for 46 days wasn't hard enough, Scott would stop to takes pictures with anyone who asked.
There were many local fans and runners who not only spotted Scott on the trail, but also had the opportunity to run some miles with him. I was lucky enough to get this opportunity too. When Scott was traveling through Central PA, my children and I were able to catch Scott near Boiling Springs. Not only did Scott stop to snap a picture with us, he suggested “now take a funny one,” which the kids loved. It's really great that so many people were able to take part in such an awesome feat.
Congrats Scott. You are a tremendous athlete, person, and inspiration.
