EGO Foam Adds Soft Cushioning

The Altra Lone Peak 5 was the first version of this iconic trail shoe to feature responsive Altra EGO midsole foam. The Lone Peak 6 continues the tradition with a heel-to-toe bed of EGO foam.

Altra EGO foam features a blend of cushioning compounds that our testers think strikes that perfect balance between soft and responsive.

“The cushion feels soft and comfortable underfoot, but doesn’t get in the way of ground feel,” one reviewer says.

But don’t let the shoe’s plush cushioning fool you. The Altra Lone Peak 6 can be just as aggressive as it is comfortable.

“Judging by the lugs and the relative thinness of the midsole, I didn’t think that these shoes would feel soft at all. I was pleasantly surprised by just how soft the new Altra Lone Peak 6 is,” says one reviewer.

A MaxTrac outsole features grippy, multidirectional lugs, so you can run confidently over a variety of terrains. And an updated StoneGuard offers reliable protection from rocks and branches underfoot.

“The soles are grippy and responsive, but with enough cushion and protection that I could tackle both technical and easy-going trails,” one reviewer says.

Even with a bed of soft cushioning and a host of protective features, the Lone Peak 6 remains lightweight and nimble.

“The Lone Peak strikes a really nice balance of offering protection from the elements while still providing a strong feeling of ground contact,” says one reviewer. “That gave me confidence on the trail.”

Reviewers also noticed how natural and comfortable the shoes felt on their runs.

“Once I start running, I stop noticing the shoe, which I think is a testament to the natural feel that the Lone Peak provides,” another reviewer says. “It’s like the shoe becomes an extension of my body.”

The Lone Peak 6 features a zero drop platform, keeping your heel and forefoot at the same level. This allows your feet to move naturally against the ground while you attack the trails. And thanks to Altra’s signature FootShape toe box, your toes can enjoy some extra wiggle room.

While some runners love having extra space, some reviewers feel this shoe offers a little too much.

“The toebox is almost too roomy for me. It’s not a dealbreaker and many people will love it, but I could handle less space,” one reviewer says.

Another reviewer agreed. “I have a medium-width foot and found that I felt most comfortable in these shoes with a high-cushion sock that helped to fill out some of the extra space. Even with my most cushioned socks, though, I still experienced ample wiggle room,” she says.

Bottom line: If you have narrow feet or you just enjoy a tighter fit, it may be best to order a half size down or go with a different shoe.

Mesh Upper Is Ready to Tackle the Trails

A Quick-Dry Air Mesh upper lets you run through wet and rainy conditions without being weighed down. Even though the upper is extremely protective, the material is surprisingly soft and flexible.

“I enjoyed the tight knit of the upper fabric. It’s breathable but keeps debris out,” says one reviewer.

If you have to run through a puddle or even a stream, drain ports on the toe box and the medial sides of the shoes help shed excess water.

A reinforced toe cap provides an extra layer of protection for your feet on tricky terrain. Long, textured laces ensure a lockdown fit with no accidental unties.

“It’s a small detail, but I like the material that the laces are made with. They are textured, which seems to help them stay tied and not come undone,” one reviewer says.

Trail runners often lament about pebbles, twigs and debris getting stuck in their shoes. Altra solves this problem with a velcro attachment on the back heel of the Lone Peak 6, where you can attach a trail gaiter to the shoe. This serves as an extra layer of protection against pesky intruders.

Not much has changed with the latest version of the Altra Lone Peak, which has loyal fans breathing a sigh of relief.

The Lone Peak 6 is about half an ounce lighter than the 5 and feels a bit more flexible, giving it a more nimble feel.

Additional lacing across the midfoot gives a more secure fit, and updated drain ports improve the flow of excess water.

The Altra Lone Peak 6 also keeps the same soft, springy midsole and grippy, durable outsole that’s made the model so popular over the past decade.

Final Thoughts

The Altra Lone Peak 6 is a versatile choice for trail runners and hikers. It’s lightweight and flexible enough to feel nimble, but protective enough to tackle any trail.

Altra’s signature zero-drop offset provides a stable and natural platform, and the EGO foam midsole offers a soft yet responsive ride.
