It’s not easy being a runner in an area with such a long winter season. But our neighbors and friends are hearty – finding ways to adapt, thrive, have fun and run. And while “spring training” isn’t quite applicable to those of us who consider ourselves Central New York runners, there’s something magical about three little words: “Mountain Goat Training.” The promise of warmer weather distracts us from the thought of running a grueling 10 miles. After months of minimal daylight and excessive snowfall, training for the Mountain Goat race is one of the best parts of a Syracuse year.
Perhaps you’re a Mountain Goat rookie and looking to join the fun this year, or maybe you’re a seasoned Goater but want to improve your time? Either way, Fleet Feet Sports has a training program for this legendary Syracuse race to prepare you for all those hills.
Starting this Wednesday, March 1, Fleet Feet Sports offers a 10-week training program for the Mountain Goat race. The program meets twice a week and focuses on hill technique, pacing, nutrition, hydration and speed work. In addition to the 20 coach-led sessions, you get to train with the massive Fleet Feet Distance Team, which will keep you motivated and accountable until race day, which is Sunday, May 7 this year.
This program would also work for anyone planning a spring half marathon in May or June. Your training schedule can be easily adjusted for whichever goal race you choose.
