Dear Coach,
While training for my triathlon, when I finish biking and head out for the run I seem to develop calf cramps. Is there something I should or should not do to help minimize this problem?
Thanks,
Diane
Dear Diane,
Those rides sound BANANAS...B-A-N-A-N-A-S!!! Sorry for that, Gwen Stefani really ruined bananas in that way. But still bananas or another food high in potassium might be a good starting point. A lot of times leg cramps are a result of depletion of potassium and even magnesium in the body. Along with that, drinking too much water without electrolytes or sodium can strip your body of those minerals.
With that you can always wear a calf sleeve or compression sock. Both will cut down on muscle vibration but also help to aid circulation keeping blood moving. RockTape also helps with circulation by providing decompression to the area applied lifting the skin from the fascia and muscle, allowing better circulation.
In the meantime, bananas might help and are only $.49 per pound at Wegmans. When you're done eating you can throw the peel at the person drafting behind you!
Coach Phil
