Dear Coach,
Last year's Shamrock Run was so cold. I'm running again this weekend and the forecast looks warmer but I'm still remembering how much my feet hurt from the cold. Any suggestions on keeping my feet warm or even just warmer and comfortable this time of year?
- Tipp Hill Runner
Dear Tipp Hill Runner,
My recommendation for running in the cold is to wear base layers, but always remember that you will warm up when you start running. In the extreme cold, one important piece of gear to have are wool socks. Fleet Feet Sports carries Smartwool socks that are great because they keep your toes warm without causing irritation. Another trick that I do prior to a race while I'm waiting for the start is use the hand warmers made by HotHands and then I just put them in my pocket or in my gloves with my phone so my phone won't die and I can listen to my music throughout the race. I hope this helps keep you more comfortable throughout the Shamrock Run!
