If you have been over to Green Lakes State Park this fall, you will see the main parking lot, near the old boathouse full of construction vehicles. New York State Parks has begun a $6 million project to convert the deteriorated 1940's boathouse on Green Lake into an environmental education center and other park improvements. The historic boathouse will be moved back from the water’s edge, where it is exposed to flooding, and renovated. The new center will include a new indoor classroom/multipurpose space, kitchenette and restrooms, as well as an outdoor classroom, lakefront boardwalk and canoe/kayak landing, new boat rental booth and storage racks, and a fishing pier.
In conjunction with the education center, State Parks will work to restore the lake edge, redirecting storm water to constructed wetlands and bioswales/bio retention basins; upgrade electric systems; and rehabilitate the deteriorated West Beach parking area with green elements.
Our crown jewel is getting a new shine.
