Dear Coach,
Why do all the event organizers only have beer available at the fun post-race parties? They should know there are fun runners with Celiac disease who like to celebrate their finish, too!

Mindy!
Most people make the mistake of running at an...wait, a question dealing with prejudice against a subculture within the microcosm of the running community. Let me dust off my bachelor's degree in sociology from Oswego State (plug!). Brief background on Celiac disease to the three avid readers I have in this blog, "Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder that can occur in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide. Two and one-half million Americans are undiagnosed and are at risk for long-term health complications." That was after just 15 seconds of googling, bottomline is that many people have issues with gluten and many of those affected are part of our running community.
Beer, which is served at many races these days, contains gluten thanks in part to the barley or wheat used to make the beer. Yes, there are gluten free beers available but I've heard less than favorable reviews. AKA: it tastes awful!
The only downside to all of this is that most of the products are donated or given at a very discounted price. That means it is usually something cheap to make and easy to mass produce to give it away gratis. BUT there are some races: CiderCross at Beak & Skiff or the Forge the Gorgeous Trail Runs at Fillmore Glen that serve cider, which is usually gluten-free!
