I have to admit something that you all might find shocking---summer is the worst. Contrary to most people, I hate summer. I hate the heat, I hate the humidity and I especially hate running in the summer. Most of my friends have spent the past few weeks complaining about the lack of summer-y weather thus far, but for me, it’s been absolutely perfect. I love rain and cooler days and if I could keep the weather this way all year round I would. But I know the heat is coming and it’s coming to stay for the next few months so I’ve been bracing myself for summer running. If you’re like me and can’t stand the heat, or even if you don’t mind summer running, here are a few tips to get you through the heat:
Run when it’s cool
We all know to run in the mornings or late evenings during the summer to avoid the hot and humid mid-day slump, but I apply this method to the whole week of running. I love the 10-day weather forecast and I often take the opportunity to plan out my runs strategically. A 90-degree day means I’m up early to run a short distance; a mid-week cool and cloudy day means I might do my long run earlier in the week to take advantage of the better weather.
Don’t be afraid of a little rain
As I mentioned earlier, I love rain and I especially love running in the rain. If there is a chance of rain for even a few minutes, then that’s when I plan my run for. While it’s not the most advisable, I like to run through thunderstorms (provided they’re not right on top of me). Running in the rain keeps you cool and hydrated, besides, a little water never hurt anyone!
Follow the shade
When I run through the relatively safe and car-free streets of my neighborhood, I run where the shade is. But I also love to run at Green Lakes because their trails are usually well shaded and protected from the sun.
Join the sports bra squad!
Growing up, I never thought I would be skinny enough to run in just a sports bra. When I saw women running around in just a sports bra, I would envy them. Years later, I discovered that it’s not really about how skinny you are; it’s about being comfortable. Women’s running company, Oiselle, started a campaign this year called National Sports Bra Squad day to encourage all women to be proud of the strength of their bodies instead of worrying about what it looks like in a sports bra. So I encourage you to try it, too as it’s a great way to stay comfortable and cool on a summertime run.
